About the Institute

The Financial Media Institute is jointly organized by the School of Communication at Hong Kong Baptist University, the School of Journalism at Fudan University, Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland, and the US-China Education Trust. Each year the FMI will invite more than a dozen top journalists and economists to take part in week-long intellectual and professional activities that include lectures, seminars, small group discussions, and the sharing of experiences. Attendees who successfully complete the course will be awarded a certificate by the organizers.

Objective

  • To analyze major economic issues which impact Greater China and other parts of the world, and broaden the vision of FMI students
  • To enhance professional and ethical standards in financial journalism in the region
  • To provide a platform for Greater China and US participants to share practical experiences and perspectives of the development of financial journalism

Program Highlights

  • A strong team of instructors including leading international journalists and economists
  • One-week intensive training taught in English/Chinese
  • Introduction to the latest development in financial-journalism reporting and writing skills and cutting-edge financial journalistic knowledge
  • Field trip(s) to media organizations
  • Participants will write news reports, which will be graded and discussed.

Course Fees

The total course fee is HK$500 per student, which covers tuition, and costs for course materials, field trips and meals (breakfast excluded). The organizers sponsor all non-local participants’ five-day accommodation in Hong Kong. Participants are responsible for the cost of traveling to the FMI.

Who Can Apply

Applicants should:

  • Be either journalism/communication students from a recognized university or comparable institution, or working journalists
  • Be able to communicate in English and Chinese at an advanced level
