Broadcast Journalism student awarded full scholarship to pursue MPhil at Cambridge University

Natalie Ngai (Broadcast Journalism, Year 3) was recently awarded The Women’s Foundation Hong Kong Scholarship of about HK$400,000 to support her MPhil in Multi-disciplinary Gender Studies at the University of Cambridge in the 2015-16 academic year. She will focus her research on women in news media.

Natalie said she understood the hardship of underprivileged women as she was raised with two siblings by a single mother. After graduating from secondary school, she had to work night shifts as a bar waitress to finance her studies. Natalie is determined to use her best efforts to improve the situation of underprivileged women. She said the internship experience in the News Division of Television Broadcasts Limited inspired her to research the representation of women in news media for her postgraduate degree.

Natalie was delighted to receive the scholarship. She expressed heartful thanks to her teachers at HKBU for nurturing and equipping her with critical thinking skills. She was especially grateful to Ms Bonnie Chiu, Associate Head of the Department of Journalism and Professor Guo Zhongshi for writing her recommendation letters. She said: “They were very helpful in assisting me to apply for the course and scholarship. French existentialist philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre said ‘there is no reality except in action’. My study at the Department of Journalism has not only taught me to think critically, but has also equipped me with the abilities to turn ideas into reality.”

The Women’s Foundation’s Scholarship Scheme supports one local Hong Kong graduate student to pursue the MPhil in Gender Studies at Cambridge every year.
